Abertay University recognised in Parliament

Dundee East MP Stewart Hosie has tabled an Early Day Motion (EDM) in Parliament celebrating Abertay’s 25th year as a University.

Abertay, which received university status on August 17, 1994, will be celebrating their 25th birthday with a ‘changing times’ talks series throughout the year featuring presentations from internationally acclaimed digital artists to debate panels discussing societies most pressing issues.

Abertay: 25 years as a University

That this house joins Abertay University in Dundee in celebrating 25 years since they were awarded University Status; Recognises the work the University has done since to establish the first computer games degree and become a world leading institution in the field; Congratulates them on being the first UK Centre for Excellence in Computer Games Education as well as being currently ranked number one in Europe for undergraduate games degrees by the Princeton reviews; Understands that to commemorate their 25th year as a university, Abertay will be hosting a ‘changing talks’ series throughout 2019 ranging from presentations from internationally acclaimed digital artists to debate panels; And wishes the University, it’s students and it’s staff the best of luck for the future.

“I was more than happy to table this EDM celebrating Abertay’s birthday and recognising some of their landmark achievements over the last 25 years.”

“Abertay has changed significantly since I attended Bell Street Tech, as it was formerly known. It’s introduction of the world’s first computer games degree to becoming a world leader in the field shows that Abertay is a modern and highly successful University which has helped put Dundee on the map.”

“The University has a huge array of talent. I was delighted to tour their video games and food technology labs last year and I'm already looking forward to visiting again at some point in the near future to see more of the great work the University does.”

“I’d like to wish the University, it’s students and it’s staff all the best for the next 25 years and beyond.”
