Stewart Hosie MP has welcomed news that the council will be considering installing a yellow box junction where Clepington Road meets Forfar Road in the city after he sought information from them on what possible measures could be introduced to alleviate congestion problems in the area.

The junction is incredibly busy, particularly during peak times of the day, something that will no doubt increase when the Dundee Transport Museum moves to the old Maryfield Tram Depot.

Following his request to Dundee city council they responded confirming that it will be looked into later in the summer.

Mr Hosie, who wrote to the council after receiving several enquiries from concerned constituents about the junction, expressed his desire to reduce any risk of future accidents and to keep the flow of traffic as intended.

Commenting Stewart Hosie MP said:

“The safety of Dundee citizens is absolutely paramount and I am glad that the Council will continue to make sure that everyone in the city feels safe to travel and enjoy all that Dundee has to offer.”

“It is important, particularly with the expected move of the Transport Museum to the old Maryfield Tram Depot site that the area is not only safe for the residents and visitors to the city but that the traffic flows as intended and congestion is kept to a minimum.”

“I am happy that the Council will be promptly considering measures that will alleviate congestion in the area.”

Dundee East MP Stewart Hosie has described his anger and disgust at the Conservatives and Labour for their failure to protect the Scottish Parliament and stop a blatant powergrab.

Last night the House of Commons voted on the EU Withdrawal bill, which would not only seek to take Britain out of the EU but would strip several powers from the Scottish Parliament and hand them over to Westminster.

An amendment, tabled by the SNP, sought to ensure that the powers would stay with the Scottish Parliament and that the devolution settlement was respected. In the 15 minutes allocated for the debate not a single Scottish MP was heard and the debate was filibustered by an English Conservative MP.

When Ian Blackford, SNP Group leader in Westminster, asked what options are open to MPs from Scotland for a proper debate on devolution and Brexit, Conservative MP Ian Liddell- Grainger shouted “Suicide” from the backbenches.

Commenting Stewart Hosie MP said:

“Last night only 15 minutes were allowed to debate the Tories powergrab. In that 15 minutes no Scottish MPs were called to speak and the "debate" was filibustered by an English Tory MP.”

“It just goes to show, once more, the conservatives utter contempt for the people of Scotland and our democratically elected parliament.”

“The vote was a real opportunity for the Labour party – who are usually so quick to claim credit for devolution – to prove to the people of Scotland that they are on their side and have the backbone to stand up to the Tories but as usual they sat on their hands and allowed the Conservatives to force through their undemocratic proposals.”

Dundee East MP Stewart Hosie has welcomed the news that Broughty Ferry Beach has once again been given a Scottish Beach Award by ‘Keep Scotland Beautiful’ which recognised “The high standards provided to users”.

The announcement comes just days after the beach was also given an “excellent” rating for its water quality.

Commenting on the award Dundee East MP Stewart Hosie said:

“Broughty Ferry beach is one of the most beautiful parts of Tayside and one of its best beaches, I’m glad that this award recognises not only the beach itself but the hard work from the Council staff who work tirelessly to maintain its beauty.”

“I hope this award encourages people who are considering a visit to Dundee to travel here and witness our city’s many spectacular sights.”

“The council do a terrific job of cleaning and maintaining the beach but keeping our city tidy is a responsibility for everyone. I was disappointed to see last Monday the state that the beach was left in after the surge in visitors during the lovely bank holiday. If we want to continue to attract global investment and high levels of tourism we all need to chip in to help ensure Dundee continues to be an attractive place to live and visit.”

Dundee East MP Stewart Hosie has welcomed the news that Dundee has been named in LonelyPlanet’s top 10 European destinations for 2018. Following the announcement tourism leaders in Dundee have predicted a huge boost for the city, with hotel managers saying that the phones have been “ringing off the hook”.

The news comes ahead of the opening of the V&A, which will open in September and will add to the ever-growing list of vibrant and exciting cultural landmarks in Dundee and is expected to attract tens of thousands of visitors in the first months of its opening.

Mr Hosie met with VisitDundee Chairman, Paul Jennings, and Dundee City Development Convenor Lynne Short earlier this month to discuss the plans for the organisation and how they can work together to help boost the profile of Dundee around the globe.

Following his meeting with Mr Jennings, Mr Hosie wrote to Fiona Hyslop, Cabinet Secretary for Culture, Tourism and External Affairs, to ask what support can be given to organisations such as VisitDundee.

“It seems like every day I am seeing new global endorsements for Dundee from the international media. Interest in our city has never been so high and there is a real buzz here because of it.”

Last week I joined my SNP colleague Chris Law MP in visiting the PDSA hospital in Dundee.

The PDSA recently announced their introduction of a reduced cost service for those who are in receipt of numerous benefits, in addition to their existing free service for those on Housing Benefit, Universal Credit with Housing element or Council Tax Support.

Those who can benefit from the reduced cost service include those on Child Tax or Working Tax Credits, Universal Credit without housing elements, Pension Credit, Job Seeker’s Allowance, Income Support, ESA, Disability Living Allowance, Personal Independence Payments, or a combination of any number of these benefits. State-retired pensioners who are householders in Council Tax Bands A-D are also eligible for the reduced cost service.

I was thoroughly impressed, not just by the facilities but by the dedication and commitment of the staff there. It is quite obvious that the vets and nurses care deeply about the animals and their owners, I’m happy to see this scheme being rolled out which will help pets and their owners across the city even more.

The PDSA is a fantastic charity and one that is well worth our support, I would encourage everyone to try and support them in what way they can. Last year alone, the Dundee centre treated 4,000 pets in over 20,000 procedures.

Earlier this month I visited the Chest Heart and Stroke Scotland shop on Reform Street in Dundee. As May is National Stroke Awareness Month I was keen to visit the shop and speak to staff, volunteers and service users about their experiences and to find out more about the fantastic services that they run.

I was delighted to visit RNLI Broughty Ferry - Scotlands busiest lifeboat station- this afternoon along with local Councillor Kevin Cordell and Community Safety and Public Protection Convener Councillor Alan Ross.

I am really grateful to the staff and volunteers for taking the time to show us around the station and inform us of the important work they do to help keep the public safe in and around the River Tay.

I hope everyone takes the opportunity to support the station in whatever way they can, including at their regular fundraisers and I look forward to working with them and supporting them in the future.

I was delighted to join my SNP Colleagues earlier today at the opening of the second phase of Discovery Walk at Slessor Gardens and to also help promote #SunnyDundee in aid of Maggie's Dundee.

It's important that we continue to recognise the impact that Dundonians have made to the modern world and I am glad I was able to witness the unveiling of five new bronze plaques commemorating postage stamp pioneer James Chalmers, electrical scientist James Bowman Lindsay, X-ray pioneer George Pirie, inventor and instrument maker George Lowden and doctor and health reformer Thomas MacLagan.

I had a great time on Sunday 15th April with SNP colleagues and members of the Bangladeshi community at the Bharatiya Ashram centre in Dundee to celebrate Bengali New Year.

Dundee East MP Stewart Hosie has written to Angus Council chief executive, Margo Williamson, regarding the Councils proposals for new parking charges.

The MP, who represents Angus towns such as Monifeith and Carnoustie raised concerns over small businesses and the high streets in the towns.

Angus Council has proposed to bring in charges of £1 for the first hour on and off-street, with a £2 two-hour on-street maximum and charges up to £4 in off street car parks.

The proposal has been condemned by many small businesses in Angus and a petition calling for a 30-minute grace period has already attracted nearly 3,000 signatures.

Commenting Stewart Hosie MP said:

“I understand that for many local authorities times are tough and savings have to be made but the council should be considering options that won’t harm small local businesses and residents in Angus especially considering Angus Council has received an extra £6 million from the Scottish Government in the last two years.”

“Places like Carnoustie and Monifeith in my constituency still have thriving high streets and I’m sure everyone is keen that is maintained. That is why I have written to the Chief Executive asking Angus Council to reconsider their position on parking charges.”

Innovative proposals from Dundee City Council are letting communities decide how best to spend £150,000 within their area.

As part of Dundee SNP's administration's approach, over £2m of the council's budget was set aside last year for people to decide upon directly.

Absolutely appalled that #Dundee2023 bid will no longer be eligible because of Brexit.

There was no hint of a problem at the wave off of our bid or when I raised it directly with the Prime Minister at PMQs a few weeks ago.

It is not the biggest problem that Brexit will bring, however it does highlight the lack of planning and foresight of the UK Government.

Dundee is still open for cultural business but this is, of course, a hugely disappointing blow for the City.

I was delighted to seek support for the excellent Dundee 2023 bid for European Capital of Culture at PMQs on Wednesday.

I asked the Prime Minister:

"A successful bid by Dundee would create over 1,500 new jobs, boost the local economy by £128 million and add almost 5% to local GDP.

"I hope the Prime Minister can put her views on Europe to one side and support a transformative bid from one of the most vibrant and forward thinking cities in the UK."

I was also delighted to be at the wave off of our city's bid yesterday in the city square, which had a fantastic turnout!

This is a very exciting time for Dundee - our bid for European Capital of Culture 2023, the waterfront development as well as being voted one of Wall Street Journal's top 10 destinations to visit in 2018!

✈️ Dundee has been ranked as one of 10 "hot destinations" in the world to visit.

Dundee East MP Stewart Hosie has re-iterated the call for the Scottish Fire & Rescue Service to be exempt from VAT. Mr Hosie said: I cannot understand why the Westminster government has refused to exempt the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service from value added tax (VAT), despite repeated demands from the Scottish Government and politicians of all persuasions. ... I agree with the Fire Brigade Union, who simply cannot see why VAT rules apply uniquely to Scotland, while the rest of the UK is exempt." Official figures from the Scottish Parliament Information Centre (SPICe) estimate The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service’s annual VAT bill at around £10 million. Mr Hosie continued: "The annual VAT bill of The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service’s would pay for an additional 337 firefighters,. I am sure that most Scots would agree with the Scottish Government and the Fire Brigade Union that the Treasury should think again and eliminate this anomaly, which would free up valuable resources for the fire and rescue service in Scotland." Stewart Hosie, MP for Dundee East, congratulates three local groups on securing a total of £29,375 National Lottery funding after applying to the National Lottery Awards for All Scotland.

Firstly, 53rd Angus (1st Newbigging) Scout Group received a £9,400 grant from Big Lottery Fund, which will be used to upgrade and improve facilities available at their scout hut and to purchase a box trailer for transporting outdoor equipment.

Braeview Academy also recently received a £9,975 award, which the school will use for a range of sports equipment to facilitate the launch of new sports clubs at the school and develop the capacity of their existing clubs. The project will also provide development training to pup sports leaders, who will be involved in delivering the project.

Finally, Tayside Council On Alcohol, who provide information and support to individuals and families affected by alcohol and substance misuse, has recently secured a £10,000 Awards for All grant. This project will use the award to continue the funding for their youth support groups which were being funded by Young Start.

Mr Hosie commented:

“This is great news - it is always fantastic to see local organisations receiving a well-earned boost. The sum of money awarded to all of these organisations is an incredible amount and will hopefully go far to helping ensure their programmes are a success.

“I have written to all of the groups separately congratulating them and I look forward to the opportunity to visit the programmes to see the great benefit they bring to our communities across the constituency.”

On Sunday I attended and spoke at the Rohingya rally in Dundee City Centre.

I am deeply concerned about the situation in Rakhine Province, and the plight of the Rohingya people and others caught up in this violence.

It is vital that the UK is actively involved in securing a solution, both in terms of the provision of aid, and exerting influence on the government of Burma. Scotland stands ready to support the UK Government in providing an appropriate response to this situation.
